Constellation Ministries

The Episcopal Diocese of Vermont is made up of 42 parishes, many of which are engaged in  “Constellation Ministries.” The general idea is to not only share clergy, but also engage in meaningful ways as congregations.

On June 1, 2024, Calvary Church, Jericho/Underhill and St. James Church, Essex Junction entered into a constellation agreement for a period of 19 months for exploration of the constellation concept in practice, which we called the Beta phase. Both parishes maintained their respective identities and Vestries. The Rev. Kim Hardy served as Rector of St. James and served as Priest-in-Charge of Calvary.

Only nine miles apart, the leadership and congregations engaged in a wide range of activities and outreach together. A Vision Team was formed to navigate practical issues like service planning and broader ideas like common outreach areas. By all accounts, our effort has been viewed as progressive, energetic and fun!

In December 2025 both vestries unanimously agreed to formalize the Covenant for a minimum of three years as of Jan 1, 2026.

Like it or not, if you worship at Calvary, by definition, you are partnered with St. James!

A presentation about our constellation story was featured at the 2025 Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Burlington, Vermont on October 25, 2025.  It is worth a watch as representatives from both parishes shared the workings, challenges, and ultimate joy in this endeavor.

ABOVE: The presentation was given by (from L. to R.) Nancy Todd (Calvary), The Rev. Kim Hardy (Calvary and St. James), Jack Manning (Calvary), and Jen Ogelby (St. James).
